APRIL 2004 NEWS ARCHIVE  RED STAR FC 93

Updated 30th April 2004

COSMO - RED STAR. Coach Jean-Luc Girard has naled his squad for the trip to Taverny: Benhamou - Dao, Diomande, Fourneuf, Hammami, Yessad, Cuervo - Delaneuville, Desmarets, Fellahi, N’Simba - Baldé, Benmesmoudi, Gueï.
Injured : Gassama, Germain
THREE GAMES REMAINING. Red Star (7th) travel on Sunday to fifth placed Cosmo. After this match the two remaining fixtures are virtually all "home" games - 9th May at Marville against struggling Paris FC and then at Bauer on the 16th against Aubervilliers. Twelve points remaining, not all are required but twelve would be nice to finish the season in style and give the club a platform on which to build for next season. Earlier this season Red Star lost 2-0 at Bauer to Cosmo.
Elsewhere : Versailles (11th) with a one point lead over their opponents Meaux (13th) meet in a vital clash. If Aubervilliers (8th) beat Paris FC (14th), the latter are virtually relegated. At the top, Villemomble (1st) must beat Evry (9th), if they are to escape the clutches of Racing (2nd), three points behind and whom are at home to Paris SG (10th). Arménienne (3rd) meet Orly (4th) at Orly, with two points separating the sides. Brétigny (12th) must also beat Saint-Leu (6th).
TAVERNY. The match, Cosmo v Red Star will take place at the Stade de Boissy, rue du Plessis in Taverny, k-o 3-30pm CET. Follow the match live on the site http://site.voila.fr/redstar

PERMUTATIONS AND POSSIBILITIES
. Even if Red Star lose their three remaining games, it will take some real freak results to send them into the DSR.
Paris FC need a mircale to overtake Red Star - three wins including one against Red Star, and they must beat Red Star by four clear goals, as Red Star won the first match between the two clubs 3-0 earlier this season.
Meaux must win two matches and gain a draw in the other - but just look at their opponents…
Brétigny need two wins, as do Versailles
Paris SG, one win and a draw
Aubervilliers & Evry, one win is enough

SUSPENSION. Nabile Yessad will miss the home game on Sunday at Bauer against Orly following the red card he picked up last week against Evry. Alhaji Baldé and Bilal Hammami have both served their suspensions and are available to coach Jean-Luc Girard. For Orly the game is a must-win situation if they are to continue their push for a promotion play-off spot. Earlier in the season Red Star won 2-0 at Orly, but this time things are sure to be different.

RED STAR - COMMUNIST ?. Recently communist politician Alain Krivine (LCR) stated that Red Star were formed by the French Communist Party. False. A quick history lesson - our club was founded in 1897 by Jules Rimet and the name was apparently chosen by the English governess of Rimets' children. For the record, the Communist Party in France wasn't formed until 1920 ! We've sent a letter to the people concerned to get facts put straight.
MORE HISTORY LESSONS. On the 21st April 1944, Saint-Ouen was subjected to some of the most violent bombardments of World War Two. Around the Stade de Paris (now Stade Bauer), nineteen huge fires raged, two hundred and fourteen people were killed and schools houses and factories were destroyed.

Updated 9th April 2004

SOME EASTER THOUGHTS. Red Star don't have a match this weekend, so after what has been a hectic last two months, perhaps it is time to draw breath and analyse the current situation.
There are five matches remaining, of which three are at home (Evry, Orly and Aubervilliers) and two away (Cosmo and Paris FC). Orly are currently in the middle of a very good run which has seen them make a laste surge for promotion. Red Star did beat them earlier on in the season at Orly, but things could be very different this time out. Evry are mid table like Red Star, not out of the woods yet as far as relegation is concerned. Last weekend they went down 1-0 at Orly. Back in September, Red Star really should have beaten Evry away, but a last-gasp goal meant that the points were shared. Aubervilliers, Red Star just have to beat. A bit of revenge for the Latt-Agnes affair. The rivalry between the two clubs goes back a couple of years, and no-one can forget the sickening tackle last season by one of their thugs on Red Stars' Samir Sahridj.
Cosmo performed a superb smash-and-grab raid on Red Star at Bauer towards the end of last year. Without being anything special, they went away with all the points. Paris FC were Red Stars' first victims this season, the club is somewhat in disarray at the moment, but nevertheless still managed to beat Racing last weekend, at Colombes.
Red Stars' form at the moment is on a bit of a high, the statisitcs are better than earlier this season. In the last three games they have won two and more importantly not conceded a goal. Prior to that a 1-0 defeat to an injury-time goal at Brétigny is the blot on the copybook. Before that, three games against the top three sides in the league; a defeat to a late goal against Arménienne; an excellent 1-1 draw at Villemomble before beating Saint-Leu 1-0 at Bauer. Compared to earlier in the season, especially November & December (defeats to St Leu, Racing, Versailles and Cosmo) Red Star have made huge progress.
On the pitch things are looking good, with a solid unit playing some excellent football and the forwards slowly getting their confidence back and scoring goals. Against Versailles Red Star should have had a hatful, only some last-gasp defending kept the score to sensible proportions.
Coach Jean-Luc Girard has built on the foundations laid by his predecessor, Azzedine Meguellatti, who in a very short space of time and with very little resources assembled a squad of youngsters with potential to become future stars. Special mention must be made here of Yoann Delaneuville, captain, who leads by example and whose phenomenal workrate has been the cornerstone of the successes this season. In defence, Vincent Fourneuf has gone from a naïve youngster last season to a composed, confident centre back this term. Alongside, Bilal Hammami plays with such vigour and strength that one forgets he is only nineteen years old. These are only examples of the progress that the team has made on the field; every member of that team has given the best of himself in the interests of the club. With a little bit more luck, and had daft goals not been given away at inopportune moments then Red Star could possibly have been in the reckoning for a fast return to the CFA 2.
Much work remains to be done off the field, the future is still uncertain for Red Star. New sponsors need to be found, investment is necessary if the club is to progress forwards. The supporters are still there, as loyal as ever, each victory is greeted with joy at the final whistle, the players are applauded and in return the men in green pay their respects to the people that encourage them. Red Star is a special club, extraordinary in the DH. Without Red Star there would have been less than twenty people present at Versailles last weekend.
So, only a couple more wins and Red Star can start to look forwards to the future, preparing for next season. This will be the first time since the season 1999-2000 that the club should avoid a relegation. But football is a funny game, and until the DH Fixtures are published for next season and the name Red Star is included, nothing is certain !

DIRECTION MONTBAURON. By public transport, take the train at Saint-Lazare to its terminus at Versailles Rive Droite. From there it is a fifteen minute walk, Avenue de Paris, Rue Montbauron then Allée Pierre de Coubertin. There are three train stations in Versailles, Rive Gauche is the nearest (RER C from Paris city center), or Chantiers, on the line from Montparnasse. Versailles is famous for the château, so if you're in Paris for the weekend, why not make a day of it in Versailles, and see the match afterwards.

FOUND HIM !. Thanks to the wonders of the web, we have managed to track down the gentleman from the UK who was Red Star - Racing present at the Racing game on Sunday. He's caled Mishi and is a fervent Dulwich Hamlet supporter. This is what he wrote about his visit to Red Star:
After the Marlow game I got an overnight coach & went to Paris for a couple of days. I decided to go there a couple of months ago when I read an article on the iminent demise of the old Stade de Colombes, which staged one of the Olympic Games in the 1920's. This is the home of Racing Club. Unfortunately they were at home the day before I got there, but Roger had found out on the internet that Red Star were at home on the sunday afternoon. And, in hindsight, I'm glad they were! I think they are in the French fourth division, but could be lower. They play in a run down 'traditional' stadium that has seen better days! The crowd was given as about 400 & they played Racing reserves & won comfortably 3-0 with some really good football. I'd love the Hamlet to go there on a pre season tour! Doubt if the Club could ever fund that though!
I bought a few bits & bobs in the club shop, though it was a bit awkward as they never spoke any English. I did understand them saying that their webmaster was one of us though!(I think he said he was a Worksop Town fan). At half time he was pointed out to me & I had a brief chat with him, hence someone snapping my picture shaking hands with him through the fences!
If ever anyone fancies a weekend away I could not recommend a visit here more highly. Basicially it was just like watching Dulwich!

AND FINALLY CYRIL...... it was an April Fool - Ronaldo wasn't at Stade Bauer yesterday... but we wonder how many folk did turn up in the hope of glimpsing the Brazilian star..

Updated 1st April 2004

RONALDO AT SAINT-OUEN. But the well-known Brazilian footballer won't be signing for Red Star, unfortunately. He will be in Paris today in order to record an advertising campaign at the Sacré Cœur in Montmartre. His sponsors also wanted him to show off a bit of his fancy footwork at a football stadium, and, as the Sacré Cœur overlooks Stade Bauer, the choice of a stadium was relatively easy !
The film, produced by none other than Woody Allen will mean that the Rue du Docteur Bauer will be partly closed off around Stade Bauer between 11am and 2pm.
The lucky ones will be the people living in the block of flats behind the goal at Bauer, where they will be only ones to see the Real Madrid star in action.
The short film should hit TV & cinema screens in September to coincide with the launch of a new football boot, " la Ronaldo ".
