SRI LANKA. The tsunami which has devastated southern asia dominates the headlines all around the world, and we at AllezRedStar.com, recent visitors to the beautiful island of Sri Lanka are moved by the televison reports and images from the area. The places we visited, and more particularly the lovely people which we met will never be the same again, and our hearts go out to the people whom have suffered. We met one family in particular in the village of Aluthgama, and we hope that they have been spared the worst of the disaster.
To all the people of the area our thoughts are with you.

JANUARY 9th 2005. Is the date when most of the games in hand will be played, except for Lusitanos - Red Star, date to be fixed. That day will see : Evry - Le Mée Sport, Sannois Saint-Gratien - Meaux. Lusitanos play another game in hand against Versailles on that date. Red Star should have played a friendly against Le Blanc Mesnil the 9th, but they too have a game in hand in their championship to be played on that date. Red Stars' next game, therefore should be on the 16th against Le Plessis-Robinson, kick off 2-30pm CET at Stade Bauer.

RED STAR WIN YOUTH AWARD. At the end of the 2003-2004 season, Red Star were honoured with the title of the Best Youth Football Club in the Ile de France region. The under-18s Coupe de Paris triumph and the honourable second place in the under 13s competition contributed in no small part to the designation of the award. Last week in a ceremony held at the Stade de France, former League president Jean Verbeke handed over a handsome trophy as well as a nice cheque for 2000 euros to Red Stars' Christian Duraincie. Red Star finished ahead of ACBB and third division (National) club Entente Sannois Saint-Gratien.

WITCHITA LINESMAN. In case you weren't aware, on Friday large parts of the Hexagon were battered by storm-force winds, resulting in much damage and sad to say, loss of life. Red Star and AllezRedStar.com were also hit by the inclement conditions; firstly the game on Sunday at Saint-Mauer was postponed, then later on in the afternoon our correspodant Gérard returned home to find himself without telephone, as a tree in his garden had ceded, destroying the telephone wires in its path. This meant that the site was slow in bringing the news of the postponement to you - our apologies.

Arbre
Gérards' one-time cherry tree and severed phone cable

This leaves of course Red Star to find a date to re-arrange the game at Lusitanos, but not before the 20th of February, as all the weekends are taken up - unless of course Red Star or their hosts have a Coupe de Paris game scheduled for that date !
For training, Jean-Luc Girard will have his men in twice this week, Monday and Wednesay, then once next week before being fully back in training 3rd of January. In the meantime there will be a friendly at Le Blanc-Mesnil on the 9th of January, a Coupe de Paris tie at Bauer against Le Plessis Robinson on the 16th (kick off 2-30pm CET) then the league gets back underway on the 23rd with Cosmo the visitors to Bauer.
DH WEEK 13. Aubervilliers beat one-time leaders Cosmo 2-1, and current leaders Saint-Leu beat Orly 3-1. Elsewhere: Versailles - Morangis-Chilly 1-1.

Red Star - Brétigny
Aboubacar Tandia and Philippe Cuervo against Brétigny

RESERVES ON A ROLL. Red Stars' reserves are still on winning tracks with a fine 4-2 win against Cachan, including a brace from youngster Chamma. Black spot on the performance was another red card, albeit unwarranted, for Grégori Sinobad.
UNDER 15s. Red Stars under 15s go top of their group with a 2-1 win over Sarcelles

IMPORTANT GAME. Red Star have a real chance to get themselves back into the leading pack if they can overcome Brétigny on Sunday. Sannois Saint-Gratien on the same number of points as Red Star receive Meaux, who are third with three points more. At the top, leaders Le Mée Sports and Saint-Leu (five points lead over Red Star) travel to struggling Evry and unpredictable Orly respectively. Cosmo play Aubervilliers and Morangis-Chilly travel to Versailles for what will be the third successive home game for Versailles. Brétigny will be hoping for a good result against Arménienne.

Red Star - Brétigny
Reevis N’Simba

INJURY LIST LENGTHENS. The win against Brétigny was not without cost, unfortunately. If Ahmed Hamdani and Aboubacar Tandia have more or less got over their injuries sustained during the game, Kaba Diomande is definitely out and Philippe Cuervo and Vincent Fourneuf are uncertain. Alhaji Baldé and Franck Gueï will also miss the trip whilst Grégori Sinobad was back in training Wednesday. A good news is that long-term injured goalkeeper Salifou Essomba is back in training.
SUSPENDED. Taïeb Abdallah will serve a one-match ban on Sunday.
UNDER 18s. The under 18s also meet Brétigny on Sunday, hoping to continue their good run against the eighth-placed side. David Giguets' charges are second, just one point behind ACBB.
LADIES. Each Wednesday Red Stars' ladies section trains at the Stade Joliot-Curie. If you are interested in joining them please contact +33 1 40 11 04 26.

JEAN-LUC GIRARD. « It's our fault that we didn't socre earlier. This win allows us to get back on the right road - providing that we can string some wins together.
We have to avoid slip-ups before the (winter) break. This win comes as a relief after recent games.
In order to win, we have to be more efficient in front of goal. Clumsiness prevents us from being efficient - and therefore serene.
It's important to win away from home - we just have to follow the same route at home. »

TWO GENERATIONS. Jean-Luc Girard brought back experienced Philippe Cuervo to add a touch of know-how to the midfield, and blooded youngster Nadjib Aklouche, a product of Red Stars' under 18S. Both gave excellent accounts of themselves.

CONGRATULATIONS. ALlezRedStar.com extend its' warmest congratulations to midfielder Grégori Sinobad, who has just become a Dad ! Bravo to Greg and his wife, and more good news is that he should be soon available after serving out his suspension.
YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO BE AT HOME. Red Stars' fans made up about eighty percent of the spectators present. A truly sorry state of affairs given the size of the town and the potential in Versailles. Two well_known faces in the crowd were the injured Alhaji Baldé and Bilal Hammami, who were also dancing around with the fans at the final outcome of the game - nice to see that the players realy do care - two top blokes as well !! Also a long-distance visitors - Jean-Noël, currently based in New York but back for the holidays. He brought in a basket of oranges for us - delicious !
No floodlights at Montbauron - ridiculous for such a superb stadium. The last fifteen or so minutes were played out in near blackness.

ELSEWHERE IN THE DH. Orly pulled off the surprise of the day at Cosmo, winning 1-0. Otherwise all the front runners won. Leaders Saint-Leu beat Arménienne 1-0, Sannois Saint-Gratien thumped Evry 4-0, Le Mée struggled to get past Lusitanos 1-0 and Meaux came back from Brétigny with a 3-0 win. SURPRISE VISITOR. Yesterday evening Stade Bauer had a very special guest - Mexico 1968 Olympic 200 metres champion Tommie Smith. The legend was accompanied on a visit to Stade Bauer by Saint-Ouens' sports supremo Karim Bouamrane. Tommie spent a rather damp twenty minutes at Bauer (it rained unfortunately !), meeting Red Stars' coaching staff and directors before moving on to a meeting at the town hall. A special page with several photos of yesterdays procedings is on-line now. Tommie Smith was also interviewed by several TV and radio networks and features in a Canal+ special on Sunday 12th December.

FOR CIVIL RIGHTS - AND AGAINST RACISM. This weekend town of Saint-Ouen pays hommage to Tommie Smith, with the inauguration of a sports hall (40, rue Eugène-Berthould) which will carry his name. (Internet : www.ville-saintouen.fr ).
For out younger readers, below we publish an article on the momentous events of 1968, a transaltion of the words of journalist Maurice Vidal, (ex-Miroir-Sprint) « Sport et Jeux Olympiques » published by Editions La Farandole, in 1976. October 68, Mexico, Colette Besson had just received her 400 metres gold medal, ahead of Lilian Board (GB). The three medallists of the mens' 200m (Smith, Carlos and the Australian Norman), were united and wore a badge of the Olympic Project for Civil Rights. ».
On the rostrum during the American national anthem, heads bowed, Smith and Carlos raised a black-gloved fist. An image which stays in the minds of the millions of men and women all around the world who were watching on TV. Remember that a few months before, the Pastor Martin Luther King had been assassinated. The black Americans were living in poverty in ghettos and were humiliated by racial segregation.
Their gestures were to prove costly - expelled from the Olympic Games. However this did not prevent Lee Evans or the great Bob Beamon from manifesting their solidarity on the winners' podium. Someon asked Evans, why he wore a beret on the podium « To protect ourselves from the rain pluie ».
During a press conference given by Tommie Smith and John Carlos, the former declared : « the Whites accept us shen we play jazz or beat records in athletics. But for them the Blacks are trained circus animals. We wanted to protest against the situation of our brothers in the USA where the citizens don't receive the same treatment. Why should we watch the raising of a flag of a country where Civil Rights are not recognised ? We are not animals without brains … »

All this took place thirty-six years ago.
Last year Tommie was asked "Would you do it again ?" during a press conference at the World Championships. Tommie Smith replied : « I do it every day. That, it's me, truly me. When I returned from Mexico, I was looked upon as if I had the plague. There was no-one to meet me at the airport. People avoided me. They were afraid in my company. I was twenty-three years old and I found it very difficult to find a job. »

Tommie Smith  JO 1968
Mexico, 1968. Left the 200 m podium : Norman, Smith & Carlos. Right, 400 m ceremony, the three AMerican athletes with the fists raised : James, Evans & Freeman

On a personal note, I was honoured to meet the great man yesterday evening. A man who represents the positive side of sport. He is in remarkably good form, a warm character, a great smile, and in all probability would still thrash me over 200 metres despite the age difference ! An excellent orator, I could listen to him speak for hours. In a word, RESPECT !!!
