DERBY DEFEAT Local rivals Villemomble ran out winners of the first derby game of the season on Saturday at the Stade Pompidou, beating a very poor Red Star by one goal to nil, the goal coming after a defensive mistake on the hour. Red Star failed to procure any real chances in the game and now are truly mid-table material. Promotion seems a long way away, with one quarter of the season already passed. The statistics go a long way to explain coach Francisco Ciccolinis' teams indifferent form. In eight games so far this season Red Star have found the net six times, and fifty percent of these goals came in the three-one victory over Racing (one of the worst defences in the division). That means six goals in twelve hours of football (excluding injury time) - one goal every two hours ! Take away the Racing game and that makes three goals in seven games, one goal every three and a half hours. Hardly the sort of exciting football that is going to get the fans flocking back to the matches. Something has to be done and quick....

NEWS Red Star hope to follow up their 1-0 away win last weekend at Rouen when they travel the short distance across the 9-3 to play Villemomble. Freshly relegated after one season in the National, the club coached by the excellent Alain M'Boma will also be looking to build on their first win of the season, a hard-fought victory at Guingamp reserves. Encounters between the two neighbours have always been close but Red Star have never won at the stade Pompidou. Kick off is at 6pm CET and the game will be officiated by Antonio Mestre assisted by Sylvain Bohrer & Ludovic Leducq. The fourth official is Yveline Lallier.

WEEKEND PREVIEW Red Star travel the relatively short distance to Rouen tomorrow, to face a side which has endured turmoil since the end of last season and has got off to a very indifferent start in the CFA. Firstly the club missed out on promotion to Pacy-sur-Eure, who were initially denied promotion to the National and Rouen were promoted in their place. Then, Rouen were relegated from the CFA to the CFA 2 on financial grounds. Rouen appealed and won only days before the seaon got underway, thus taking their place in the CFA. Over the last ten seasons Rouen have been through similar turmoils to Red Star. The club is relatively big wth a decent fan base. It is also one of the few CFA clubs to employ a crowd segregation policy.
For the match, Rouen will be without Lalaoui, Mendy, Ferreira, Sorrentino and Tagheda, all through injury. Captain Louiron is out through suspension. Last week Rouen beat Red Stars' neighbours Villemomble 3-1 away, but the week before suffered a horrible 4-1 drubbing at the hands of Racing, whom fell 3-1 at Red Star last Saturday. At present there is remarkable inconsistency in the division, so calling this game is a hard task. Red Star will definitely be without the suspended NDiaye and Ongmakon whereas Matingou is doubtful for the game.

RED STAR RUN RIOT. After a opening to the season that could at best be described as "average", where they only managed to find the net twice in the first five games, Red Star ran riot on Saturday at Bauer against a Racing side that had thumped Rouen 4-1 the previous week. Amadou Diagouraga got things underway in the sixth minute, rising like a salmon above the Penguins' defence to power home a super header. Red Star then extended their lead on the half hour when an atrocious mistake by the visitors' keeper allowed Maxime Ongmakon to shoot the ball into the empty net. In the second half substitute Bouzid Yosri further extended the home sides' advantage before Racing pulled back a consolation goal in the dying seconds of the encounter. Only last week we compared Red Stars' striking rate with that of England striker Wayne Rooney - over the last seven days both Red Star and the Manchester United frontman have both had the last laugh over AllezRedStar.com !
Red Star fielded two new faces - well, not as new as that really, as Yoann Delaneuville is a familiar face to Red Stars' followers and Andy Dhamani has been awaiting clearance from the federation to play for Red Star after a spell in Algeria.
Nearly nine hundred spectators witnessed the win, swelled by a contigent of Racings' loyal supporters, whom, like their Red Star counterparts have had to endure the ups and downs of recent seasons. No doubt they will be eagerly awaiting the return game in Colombes, to get revenge for the Bauer defeat.
Coach Francisco Ciccolini was pleased with the win, and highlighted the goal scored by striker Amadou Diagouraga, somewhat mute since the start of he CFA campaign. He noted that the tall striker has suffered from injury since arriving at Red Star, and is currently only operating at around 50% of his capabilities. The Corsican went on to say that Diagouraga, once top scorer in the CFA whilst at Sainte-Geneviève before moving to Tours, is going to hit top form soon and expects him to go on to score 15-20 goals this season. Diagouragas' entente with midfielder Jamel Zahiri in particularly pleasing.
Meanwhile ex-Red Star defender David Pinto, currently at Racing was said to be "gutted" at the final whistle.
Red Star now travel to Rouen next weekend to face a team with mixed fortunes this season - on Saturday they nailed Red Stars' neighbours Villemomble to the foot of the table, winning 3-1 at the Stade Pompidou in Villemomble.

Red Stars' supporters are organising a bus to Normandy, which leaves Saint-Ouen at 2-30pm CET on Saturday 20th. For club members the cost in ten euros, non-members twelve euros. Meanwhile, Red Star announced that in order to conform with the current legislation on sports grounds, there will in future be no readmission to the stadium once exitted, and there will be no free entry at half time.
OTHER RED STAR RESULTS The reserves were held to a goalless draw at the Ile des Vannes on Sunday by Les Ulis whilst the third XI went down to a 2-1 defeat at Espérance Paris 19ème. The under 18s got their campaign off to a start in high-scoring fashion sharing six goals with ACBB in a 3-3 draw.

NO SCORE BORE DRAW Red Star returned from Brittany with a share of the spoils in goalless draw at Plabennec. Coach Ciccolinis' men did put the ball into the home net, only for Amadou Diagouragas' strike to be ruled out for an improbable offside. Maxime Ongmakon had a plea for a penalty waved away by the referee, and the game petered out into a lifeless stalemate. Red Star drop a few plces in the league, but with no real front-runner for the moment, only a couple of points separate the top from the bottom, and a couple of good results starting with a win against Racing at Bauer next weekend would propel Red Star towards the right end of the table. On the other hand, Racing annihilated strongly-fancied Rouen 4-1 at home last weekend, so nothing can be taken for granted on Saturday. Kick off is at 6pm CET.
The inability of Red Stars' strikers to ensure that leather contacted goal-net means that in five games Red Star have scored twice, or 225 minutes between goals. Marginally worse than Wayne Rooney in an England shirt. Worse, fifty percent of the goals have been scored by defenders. The scorer hasn't been troubled on Red Stars' travels, as both goals have been scored at home, at Stade Bauer. One wn in five games is somewhat short of promotion material, too.
On the positive side, goalkeeper Xavier Pinoteau, in for Yoann Djidonou, away on international duty with Benin, kept his first clean sheet on his full debut with Red Star. On the negative side, Red Star once again finished with ten men as defender Francisco Donzelot got his marching orders deep into stoppage time.

RESERVES Ineptitude in front of goal also proved to be costly for Red Stars' reserves got their campaign underway at Bauer on Sunday afternoon against l'Hay les Roses, from the south of the city. The visitors ran out 1-0 winners in a game that Red Star were expected to win.

WEEKEND ROUND-UP On the positive side, it can be said that Red Star kept up their unbeaten home record this season as they were held to a 1-1 draw by visitors Orléans, but then again the reality is that for the second half they were truly awful and had their brilliant goalkeeper Yoann Djidonou to thank for keepng them in the game. In a lacklustre first half Red Star huffed and puffed against the bottom team in the league, and just before the interval centre half Soilyho Mété picked the ball up some twenty five yards out from the Orléans goal before letting fly with a terrific drive that flew past the visitors' keeper and into the roof of the net.
After the pause things got worse however, and Orléans piled on the pressure but were unable to find a way past international Djidonou, whose value must have taken a leap forwards after this game. Watched by a crowd of five hundred on a sunny and warm evening, the game was marred at the end by a horrendous tackle from Red Stars' Amadou Ndiaye which resulted in the unfortunate Rudy Wendling leaving the game on a stretcher. NDiaye was quite rightly sent off for the assault. Off the field Red Stars' coach Ciccolini was involved in a heated exchange of words (industrial) with a section of the Red Star supporters. A day to forget all round.
