DUNKERQUE, erstwhile D2 club (1935 - 1939, 1966 - 1996) before relegation to the National (96-97) then to the CFA. In 1978-79 they finished third in D2, missing out on promotion to D1.
Founded in 1919, under the title Union Sportive Dunkerque-Malo, glory days came in 1929, when they reached the semi-final of the Coupe de France, losing 2-1 to Sète, at the Stade de Colombes. In 1935 the club turned professional, and remained so until the outbreak of the Second World War. In 1966 the club won the North Group of the CFA (D3 in those days). For a while the club were forced into exile at Gravelines, and despite a bright season with Alex Dupont as coach, in 1995-96 the club were relegated despite average crowds of 2 300.
Currently Dunkerque are in the running for promotion back to the National, but a recent 2-0 defeat at Avion complicates affairs. Three points separate them from Red Star, and this match could prove to be a critical point in the season. However, with only fourteen goals scored, attack is Dunkerques' weak point (the poorest in the league). Top scorer Reynald Truchon has scored 6 times. To strengthen the side, they have recently recruited old boy Nicolas Huysman. Also in the ranks, but currently out of favour is former Red Star goalkeeper David Berthelot.
