The game took place as part of a series of friendlies between French and Italian clubs:
- Le Havre AC – Atlanta Bergame : 2-3
- Nice – Milan AC : 3-3
- Nîmes – Fiorentina : 0-2
- RC Paris – Inter Milan : 3-0

A few days before the game, Stade de Reims had lost their second European Cup Final 0-2 against Real Madrid.
Raymond Kopa, winner with Real Madrid had returned to Reims for the 1959-1960 season.
A star-studded line up on the Saint-Ouen pitch including two players whom went on to play for Red Star the following season - Armand Penverne and René Bliard.
Also playing was a youngster under the name of Claude Dubaële, a future Red Star coach in 1979-1980, when Red Star were promoted from the DH to the fourth division.
Just Fontaine was top goalscorer in the 1958 World Cup with thirteen goals, a record which stands to this day. He also scored 38 times in the championship for Reims, season 1957-1958. John Charles, legendary Welsh international, top scorer for Leeds in 1957-1958 (38 goals) then in Italy the following season with Juventus (28 goals).
During the season 1953-1954, in the English second division, John Charles scored 42 goals.
Arguably the greatest of all Welsh footballers passed away in 2004.
