Sir Stanley Matthews

SIR STANLEY MATTHEWS

This site would like to pay hommage to one of the finest English footballers ever, who passed away on Wednesday, aged 85. A link with Red Star - on October 28th 1938, Stan and England beat France 3-0 at Wembley, and Fred Aston, a sort of "Franglais" played for the Blues that day. In 1947, Red Stars' goalkeeper Julien Darui represented a Continental XI in a game at Glasgow, and conceded six goals, Stan playing opposite him in that game.

COUPE DE LA LIGUE. To reply to a question posed by one of our readers, only the winner of the League Cup will be able to take part in the UEFA cup. If PSG beat Red Star in the final, say, and if PSG finish second in the league, then PSG will take place in the Champions' League, but the sixth place club in D1 will be offered the place in the UEFA Cup.
CFA 2. Tinqueux - Red Star, Sunday 27th February, 3pm CET. In the DHR, Red Star travel to Goussanville, kick off 3-30pm CET, same day.

ISTRES. Due to play Istres on March 3rd, the game has been rescheduled. Origianlly planned for February 23rd, Red Star objected and a new date of between March 11th & 18th has been proposed, but Red Star are not too happy with these dates either.
COUPE DE FRANCE. The next round, against Lyon will take place on Saturday 4th March at Stade Marville, time & prices to be announced. The last time Red Star met Myon was at Dijon in the Cup in 1984, when Lyon won 2-1. Both clubs were in D2 at that time.

Sedan will have a new stadium in a few months' time, the sporting complex Louis Dugauguez which could easily hold the entire population of the town. Updated 13th February QUOTE, UNQUOTE...PIERRE REPELLINI: "The players showed an eagerness. They gave exactly the same performance as at Saint-Etienne, only with one less goal. Finally, they lads controlled the second half.
Now we have to think and compete in three competitions, and take each match as it comes. (!) Musn't complain, though, but the Federation will have to take a closer look at the fixture list, and it didn't imagine that a National club could go so far in three competitions. I don't want to kill my lads playing three games a week !"
VINCENT DOUKANTIE:"Before the match, we told ourselves, that if we were to beat Le Havre, after Saint-Etienne, it wouldn't be luck but confirmation of our status" How explain the contrasting fortunes in the league and the cups ?
"Our playing style works better against a more technical team from D1 or D2. Against National teams, they defend with seven defenders. There is the explanation."
KARIM FELLAHI: "Greate pleasure to score aginst a D1 team, especially after the goal at Geoffroy-Guichard, but we struggle in the league. This should give us confidence for the rest of the championshp.".
XAVIER GRAVELAINE: "We were crap - perhaps it was due to not being used to three o'clock kick-offs. Whatever, we created very few chances."
ATTENDANCE. Nearly two thousand paying spectators, one of the best at Marville. Let's hope to see one or two of them back again soon !
AWAY DAYS. Don't forget, The Friends of Red Star are organizing a day out to Sedan; call +33 6 08 70 62 57.

CFA 2. Red Star lost 3-2 at Levallois 2-3 with goals from F. Diawara and Aïchour.

Updated 11th February HOW MANY ? We have the feeling that our hosts at Reims somewhat underestimated the crowd on Wednesday evening. Given as being 2000, but seeing as most were stood up (!) the figure seems more like three and a half thousand. Boy, could we do with that at Marville !
