THE CROWDS FLOCK TO CLERMONT

Newly promoted, Clermont continue to be a surprise package, with forty-two points and two games in hand. The first at home to Grenoble folowed later by an awkward trip to Beauvais. Clermont, coached by René Le Lamer, former player at Nantes, Ajaccio, Troyes and Angers as well as coach at Concarneau, Saint-Dizier, Louhans-Cuiseaux and Istres are in the race for promotion to D2
Other than sporting achievement, Clermont can be proud of their attendance figures. Despite having to play away from their brand-new home at Gabriel Montpied, (cap. 10 500 places), victim of the December storms, the club attracted 5 200 against lowly Fréjus, 4 500 for Raon-l'Etape and 8 000 tickets sold for the match against Besançon. The club play their home matches at the Stade Michelin, home of AS Montferrand, the famous rugby club.
In 1997 Clermont hit the headlines, when, 4-1 down at home to PSG in the Coupe de France, Clermont stormed back to earn a 4-4 draw, then eliminated the Parisians in the penalty shoot-out.
