Goalkeeper
Clubs : Reims, Valenciennes, Bordeaux, Reims, Troyes, Red Star (1963-1968), Dreux, Mantes-la-Ville, Puteaux, Stade-Français, Rueil-Malmaison.
A remarkable goalkeeper who managed to hold on to his licence as a player for thirty six years ! He finally hung his boots up at the age of fifty three, after serving Rueil-Malmaison. In 1998 he was still goalkeeping coach at Suresnes. Before arriving at Red Star, he played at numerous clubs, including a European Cup with Reims at twenty years of age. His ability was given recognition by being selected for teams at university, amateur, under-21's and during his period of National Service, where he won the World title in Argentina. Very popular at Saint-Ouen, he starred in the promotion campaing to D1 in 1964-65. Marcel Dantheny still lives at Saint-Ouen, and often visited the stadium along with his friend Daniel Rodighiero with him he played alongside during the season 63-64.
He made his last visit for a match of CFA 2, as he dislikes the body searches carried out at football stadia. In his era, football was more convivial, and players met supporters at the end of games. A different epoch altogether. Julien Darui

DARUI Julien

Born Oberkom (Luxembourg) 16th February 1916
International (25 caps)
Goalkeeper
Clubs : Charleville, O. Lillois, Red Star (1940-1942), Lille OSC, Roubaix-Tourcoing, Montpellier.
One of a succession of great Red Star custodians, following in the footsteps of Chayriguès and Thépot. Julien Darui only played for two seasons in the Parisian suburbs. However, his spell at Saint-Ouen in 1942 resulted in his lifting the French Cup after having lost the 1936 final with Charleville. Champion of the Zone Nord in 1940-1941, he became champion of France with Roubaix-Tourcoing in 1946-1947 whilst astonishingly holding the post of coach to the Belgian club Courtrai !
At Wembley along with Fred Aston, he excelled in the famous 2-2 draw for France against England, which at the time was considered a victory. He also represented a European XI at Glasgow in 1947 versus a Great Britain XI.
Despite his small physique Darui went on to become a legend, thanks to his alertness, strength and agility. Born in Luxembourg but nevertheless represented France at international level from 1939 to 1951. Had it not been for the Second World War, his career would have been ever more impressive.
Sixty years after his exploits on the field of play, he was voted as the greatest ever French goalkeeper by journalists of l'Equipe Magazine of the 12th June 1999. International:
