HALL OF FAME  RED STAR 93

GAMBLIN Lucien

Born Ivry-sur-Seine
International : (17 caps)
Defender
Club : Red Star (1907-1925)
Captain of Red Star for twenty years, Paris and finally the French national side. A rock at the heart of the defence, with an equally astonishing sporting career: gymnastics champion at seventeen years of age, twelve seconds for the 100 metres, 52 for the 400 he could shot-putt over ten metres and passed 1m 60 at the high jump. All this in 1907 ! He was also captain of the first French team to beat England, at the Stade Pershing. The Great War of 1914-18 interrupted his career, but nevertheless received the Légion d'Honneur medal for bravery. He became a sports journalist when he finally hung up his boots, and had a special way with words in the same way as with a ball. International :

When on song, this man from the south could be a brilliant winger, capable of scoring goals. He had a fine right foot, as is proved by thirteen goals in three seasons, but at times descended into the ordinary when not involved in the game. Guy Garrigues

Winger who arrived at Red Star together with a half-a-dozen other players at the time of the merger between Red Star and Toulouse. This concocted fusion thus permitted Red Star to re-take their place in D1 in 1967. A conversion from winger to the defence after two seasons meant that he spent a further six years with the club. Garrigues represented his country at junior and under-21 level. He ended his career at Lyon under the auspices of coach Aimé Jacquet and bowed out with a Cup Final apperance in 1976, lost 0-2 to Marseille. In this match he played alongside a future Audonien, goalkeeper Gilles De Rocco.

An unmistakable figure on the pitch. Once locked on to his man, impossible to shake off. Noted for his man-marking of Skoblar against Marseille in 1971. Amateur international. Alain Gunia

GUNIA Alain

Born Clermont-Ferrand, 27th November 1966
Defender
Clubs : Reims, Alès, Bourges, Reims, Red Star 93 (1991-1998), Angers.
For seven years Alain Gunia was a cornerstone of the Red Star defence. Strong and combative with a big heart and off the field a gentle giant. Alain deserved to have played in D1. Before coming to Red Star, he went through the black period in the history of Reims, when the club disappeared from the football map. When his contract with Red Star ended, he suffered the misery of unemployment before signing with Angers in the National. He was in part responsible for the upturn in fortunes of the SCO, bringing an element of stability to a fragile defence. This season he will renew his acquaintence with Red Star 93.
