The much-travelled Vergnes arrived at Red Star from Montpellier in his native Herault. In a career spanning ten clubs, he never had a chance to shine at Saint-Ouen despite being a natural goalscorer. His first season with Red Star could be described as a period of settling in, but his second produced only eight goals. After his spell in the capital he headed back south to Nîmes and renewed succes, being capped for his country and marking the moment with a goal. Third top scorer during the seasons 70-71 and 71-72, his 27 and 26 goals being narrowly pipped to the hotshot tag by Skoblar (OM) and Keita (Saint-Etienne). Neverthelss, in his career he easily passed the 100 goal mark in D1. International :
