WINNING IN THE RAIN, WE'RE WINNING IN THE RAIN...

Despite near-monsoon conditions at Bauer on Saturday evening on a difficult pitch not really suited to their style of play, Red Star stamped their authority on the game and deservedly won the encounter to confirm their status at league leaders. But the start was diffult to digest. The visitors attacked the game from the whistle and put the Audoniens under a great deal of pressure without really threatening Yann Bell. The spell lasted only sevent minutes, however,as from Red Stars' first excursion out of their half, some faulty marking in the danger area saw DOUMBYA alone, and his shot on the turn flew past Sébastien Vandermersch into the Saint-Omer goal (1-0).
Relief for Red Star having scored at the vital moment. The home side continued to dominate, and Vandermersch was obliged to dive at the feet of the dangerous Benmesmoudi to prevent a second goal. But as the half wore on, Saint-Omer came more into the game. Ten minutes before the pause the heavens opened and Bauer was subjected to a deluge, making playing conditions very dangerous. On the stroke of half time BENMESMOUDI beat the offside trap and raced through to curl a lovely shot past the stranded Vandermersch and Red Star went to get dry at half time with an extended advantage (2-0).
The rain stopped during the interval, but despite a rare threat to Bells' goal from a Merveillie header, Red Star went three up when Baldés' inch perfect cross was swept home by DOUMBYA (3-0). On the hour Yann Bell slipped on the wet surface and allowed Arnaud Cuvelier to pull one back for the visitors (3-1), the first goal conceded in the championship since the home defeat against Oissel back in September, but this only fired Red Star up and five minutes later Azzedine BENMESMOUDI doubled his tally with a fine lob to make it 4-1.
A brilliant win for Red Star, proving that the league leaders are a complete squad, like Chelsea. Up front Doumbya and Benmesmoudi were practically unstoppable, the former has certainly silenced his early-season critics in spectacular fashion. In midfield Sinobad again was awesome, alongside Reevis N'Simba who simply oozed class. As for the defence, apart from the slip-up which resulted in Saint-Omers' consolation goal, a flawless performance. Special mention to the hard-running Jérémy Budoc, normally a midfielder and above all Red Stars' Moroccan under-18 international Assad Béhiche, making his full CFA 2 debut. Solid, confident and not at all overawed, a memorable debut for the youngster. Having the classy Nabile Yessad and Bilal Hammami alongside helped the youngster really get a grip of his game. Fantastic, Red Star, a truly awesome performance which will strike fear into the hearts of their tital rivals.
