GOOD START TO 2006 (ON THE PITCH, AT LEAST)

Another win for Red Star on the mong road to promotion to the CFA, but the day was spoilt somewhat by events off the pitch following a tumultuous AGM held in the morning and due to the at times indifferent performance on the pitch. In truth Red Star were the better team, but had it not been for some appalling finishing and some excellent goalkeeping by Yann Bell then an earnest if somewhat limited Abbeville might have earned a draw. As it was, former Lens man Mickaël Debève now Abbeville coach left Bauer empty handed.
Red Star looked the better from the off, and Davidson had a goal refused early on for a doubtful foul on the visitors' goalie Graindor. The foul that Abbeville conceded to gift Red Star a penalty looked even more dubious on seventeen minutes but DOUMBYA accepted the gift and beat Graindor to give Red Star the lead (1-0). On the terraced a small group clamoured for the resignation of the clubs' directors whilst lauding the coach Girard. On the pitch Red Star huffed and puffed, humping long balls forwards to Doumbya and Benmesmoudi. Graindor only had the job of clearing these hopeful punts whilst at the other end Bell was kept busy, making a couple of vital saves from Peltier, the latter also guilty of squandering a golden opportunity with Bell beaten for once.
Much of the same in the opening skirmishes of the second period, but with Abbeville tiring rapidly, Benmesmoudi sealed the win in fine stlye in a classic Red Star move. Davidson was put through clean on the left, his acceleration was simply breathtaking as it took him past the defender to get to the bye-line where his cross was converted by BENMESMOUDI to double the lead. (2-0). Former England and Leeds striker Alan "Sniffer" Clarke would have been proud of that one - Gary Lineker too, no doubt.
Red Star dominated as the game drew to a close, earning four points and the accolades of the supporters. With other results more or less going their way, Red Star have a fantastic chance to get out of the CFA 2 - let's just get thigns sorted out off the pitch now.
