Updated 11th June WASQUEHAL SAVED. Red Star have an important meeting on Wednesday 16th June with the DNCG where they will once again present their budget for the forthcoming season. Meanwhile the same body announced yesterday that Wasquehal, who finished 15th in the league have been saved from demotion to the National. A deal was announced last Friday between Wasquehal and Lens, who play in D1. Now what happens if they meet in the French Cup, for instance ?
Updated 8th June GUION GOES. David Guion, defender, has signed a contract with Istres (National). Guion arrived from Mulhouse at the start of the 1997-98 campaign and scored this season against Valence. Updated 7th June DEPARTURES. The future of Red Star is still uncertain following the meeting with the DNCG on Thursday. If Red Star stay in D2, the budget will be 22 million French Francs, 3.35 million Euros or £2.2m. However, on Friday the President of Lens (D1), neighbour of Wasquehal announced the signature of an accord between the two clubs. The result of this is an initial " loan " of 3MF, or 460 000 Euros, £300 000. If the League gices its blessing, then Wasquehal will have a better chance of staying in D2. Cannes will re-present their revised bidget to the DNCG this week. Updated 3rd June DIAWARA QUITS. Samba Diawara, 21, defender, signed yesterday with Troyes, freshly promoted to D1. Samba joined Red Star in 1989 and towards the end of this season was named captain of the first team by coach Girard. Good luck to Samba at his new club - he will be missed.
Updated 2nd June D2 SURVIVAL Jean-Luc Girard stated in the press " I will only believe that the club is still in D2 the day I see the fixture list for D2 with Red Stars' name on it. " Updated 1st June WASQUEHAL TO GO THE WAY OF CANNES ? According to Le Parisien, ES Wasquehal, Red Stars' victims on Saturday, have been relegated by the Direction National de Contrôle de Gestion into the National. In what is rapidly turning into a typical French farce, the club from the Lille suburbs join Cannes in the elevator going down only. Also, Troyes and Nice are also under close scrutiny and AC Ajaccio will have their recruitment policy administered. For Red Star, this helps the cause to stay in D2 despite being relegated on the field of play. Meanwhile, Jean-Claude Bras, club president still remains cautious and is prepared for an eventual descent. He does however retain faith in coach Jean-Luc Girard and the youngsters at the club. At the same time it looks like Crucet, Guion, De Blasiis et André have all played their last games in the famous green shirt.
Updated 31st May CHAMPIONNAT DE PARIS. Sunday afternoon, and one of the reserve teams of Red Star, who play in the Championship of Paris have won 7-1 and have therefore won promotion to a higher division. Some good news at last ! Updated 29th May CANNES BOOTED OUT ! Following a meeting Wednesday between the DNCG (direction nationale de contrôle et de gestion), the body which controls the finances of rench football clubs, AS Cannes have been booted out of D2 and releagted into the National. The budget for the next season, of 50MF did not carry enough guarantees to stisfy the DNCG. Advantage to Red Star, because, along with the non-arrival of Ajaccio, the 18th & 19th club in D2 should be saved relegation. Up to Red Star now to beat Wasquehal !
Updated 26th May CONTRACT DETAILS. Players at the end of the contracts at the end of this season are :
As of yesterday, the state of play on the contract front is as follows : Updated 25th May GIL. Updated 15th February SOUDANI KO'D. Farid Soudani, the new Red Star striker signed from Auxerre made his exit from the action on Saturday evening on a stretcher, victim of a rupture achilles tendon. He will miss the rest of the season.
Updated 8th February Florian Albert, the Hungarian midfielder imported for the start of the season has quit the club and returned to his home country. A promising start to the season was curtailed cruelly by a long-term injury, and had only just made his come-back.
Updated 4th February Faride Soudani, who was touted to join Red Star at the start of this season has finally joined the club, signing a contract for two and a half seasons. A ligament operation at the end of last season put paid to a move to Marville, so he packed his bags and left Auxerre for a loan spell at Caen. His career to date is as follows: Lille (1987-1993) then on loan to Beauvais 1992-1993 ; Roubaix (1993-1994) ; Paris FC (1994-1995) ; Gazélec Ajaccio (1995-1997) ; Auxerre (1997-January 1999) : Loaned to Laval last season then Caen at the start of this. He has played one match for Algeria (in 1998 against Bulgaria) and featured in ten outings for Lille in D1, making his debut at sixteen years of age. Top scorer in the National 1 in 1996/97 with a remarkable 24 goals. On paper, a worthy sucessor to Sami.
Updated 17th January: BYE BYE SAMMY ! Sad news from Friday is that the Red Star striker Samuel Michel has signed a contract with D2 rivals Guingamp. Michel left Red Star once before to try his luck with Rennes, but spent his time loaned out to Sochaux, where he was top marksman in D2 for the season 96-7. He returned to Rennes, but was unable to command a regular sport, so in September 1997 he returned to Saint-Ouen. This season, up to being injured in a cup tie at Salbris he has scored nine goals and was once leading scorer. We wish him all the best for the future and thank him for his spells with us.
Updated 15th January: The winning goal against Le Mans, incorrectly awarded to Crucet, has been finally credited to Frankie BONORA. All you trainspotters out there can now update your records accordingly !

Updated 8th January: Red Star announced the arrival of central defender Kwami HODOUTO from AJ Auxerre. The 24 year-old, who has had first division experience with AS Cannes signed a six-month contract. The only question mark has been a series of injuries which has kept him out of the side at Auxerre.
Updated 5th January: Disappointment is the order of the day after Aimé Jacquet drew out the name of Guingamp as the next opponents in the French Cup, away. Another long trip for Red Star to Brittany, after beating Lehon 2-0 in the last round. Rendezvous at the Stade Roudourou, Guingamp on Saturday 23rd January at 8pm CET. Jean-Luc Girard, coach of Red Star admitted that it will be a tough match, but Red Star will go all out for victory.
Updated 22nd December: The Direction Nationale de Contrôle de Gestion (DNCG), the body which scrutinises the financial affairs of the French football clubs has approved Red Stars' projected budget. With a rise from 24.5 to 31.5 million francs (2.4 to 3.1 million pounds sterling) the club can now attack the transfer market, which opened last Sunday until the end of January. Despite low turn outs at home games, Red Star will be able to focus on recruitment. According to club president Jean-Claude Bras, top priorities are a striker and a midfield general. He added that he " Remains convinced that we can avoid relegation and even finish the season higher placed than last seasons' eighth ".
Updated 21st December: Red Star left it very very late to beat hosts Lehon yesterday in Brittany. The non-leaguers were only seven minutes away from a penalty shoot-out and a possible shock victory when David GIRAUDO fired home the goal to break the deadlock. At the very end of the extra time Franck BONORA made it safe with a second goal. Earlier Red Star had bombareded the home goal without success, hitting the bar on several occasions. Red Star now must wait until the 5th of January to know their next opponents, the draw being made by Aimé Jacquet in Paris at 12h30. Next round to be played the 23/24 January, including the big clubs of Division One.
Updated 18th December: Sundays' match at Lehon in Brittany for the Coupe de France kicks off at half past two (French time). Basically it's a bloody long way; the nearest big town would be Saint-Brieuc. 421km in total from Paris - take the A10 direction Bordeaux then the A11 direction Le Mans. Then take the A81 direction Rennes, to the end of the motorway. N157 for 43km, D157 for 4km, direction Laval, N136 for 9 km direction Rennes, N137 for 46 km direction Rennes / Dinan / St. Malo, then the D676 for 6 km to Dinan; then finally take the D2 for 10km to LEHON. Lost ? You will be !
Updated 13th December: HE'S BACK ! Big surprise Saturday evening at Marville with the return of Red Star goalkeeper Jean-Phillipe FORÊT. Injured during the last home match of the previous season (Nice, won 1-0), Forêt made a winning start to his season, making a couple of good saves and commanding well his penalty area, especially in face of the increased pressure he was put under in the last few minutes of the match.
Updated 9th December: RÉGIS ROCH NAMED AS ASSISTANT TO GIRARD. Former Red Star goalie Régis Roch, 40, was unveiled yestreday as the new right-hand man to Jean-Luc Girard. In addition to this new role, Roch will also be responsible for the specific coaching of the goalkeeper roster at Marville, now four with the arrival of Fabrice Gorge, ex-Charleville custodian. How about a couple of decent defenders, Monsieur Bras ?
Updated 7th December: DEFEAT AT NIORT - THE VISIONS OF TIM, A RED STAR SUPPORTER. Captain Courageous is M. Bras So, the ship is steaming onwards at full speed at around the fifth week, the horizon is approaching fast (the D1), then to the starboard the Captain's no 2, Jean Sérafin points to the Iceberg, but good Captain Bras booms with joy the beautiful glistening Stade de France. " No Captain it's an iceberg", says Sérafin. Too late they collide and the ships defence concedes bucket loads of goals, time passes quickly and the ship is over halfway down the League. Updated 1st December: I'M FREE ! After stumping up bail of 500 000 French Francs, Red Star president Jean-Claude Bras has finally been released from prison. He had been incarcerated since the 23rd October, linked with the allegations over the Credit Lyonnais corruption affair. The affair is still far from over, but at least now (most importantly) Red Star has its president back, and hopefully this will put the club back on the rails.
Updated 30th November: PHEW ! Red Star progress in the French cup after a narrow victory over lowly Salbris. Goals from Mauricio (36) and Agasson (80th minute) were sufficient to beat their hosts. Coach Jean-Luc Girard said that his men had " fulfilled their contracts as professionals " in beating Salbris. Next step - Cannes home Wednesday evening. A different ball game altogether. Updated 26th November: FRENCH CUP. Kick of at 14h30, Saturday 28th November, for the French Cup clash against the minnows of SALBRIS.
Updated 21st November: Red Star are now deep in trouble after yet another away defeat at Caen. Despite opening the score through Franck BONORA, Caen equalised virtually straight from the kick off, Sami Boutal, ex-Audonien scoring his ninth of the season. Minutes later Willy Loko made in 2-1, a dodgy refereeing decision denied Sami Michel a penalty before Tanguy wrapped the match up with the Normands' third.
Updated 14th November: A humiliating defeat for Red Star at Sedan, crushed 5-0. Surely the National is inevitable now. One begins to wonder what effect the brouhaha over the Stade de France this summer and Bras being locked away has had on the club. Perhaps if Red Star had stayed at Bauer, then they wouldn't have found themselves in this mess ! Updated 12th November: SÉRAFIN GETS THE BOOT: As supporters arrived at the stadium yesterday evening for the match against Châteauroux (1-1) they were greeted with the news that the coach, Jean Sérafin had been relieved of his duties. The decision was taken in the hours before the match, and kept secret until the evening. Jean-Luc Girard, assistant coach takes over the reins on a caretaker basis.
Updated 30th October: BRAS BEHIND BARS - CLUB PRESIDENT IN THE SLAMMER ! Jean-Claude Bras, businessman and President of Red Star 93 spends another night in the prison at La Santé. Judge Eva Joly condemned Bras into detention for failing to stump up a bail of 10MF (one million pounds or thereabouts). Bras, implicated in alleged financial irregularities during a takeover bid will rest encaged until he can pay all or part of the bail amount. The affair should have no bearing on Red Star, but it's hardly a positive thing for a club, still in the running for residency at the Stade de France, to have its' President in gaol. Updated 29th October: RED STAR do a double over Le Mans to progress through to the next round of the league cup. Despite trailing to their hosts at the interval, a goal scored by Darblet in the 35th minute, Red Star got their act together to win 2-1. MAURICIO, a second half substitute for Fabien Valéri set up Frankie BONORA for his first goal for the club, then Mauricio himself grabbed the winner with fifteen minutes remaining. A performance to bring relief after the problems of the last month and a half. Bravo, lads, keep it up !
Updated 20th October: STADE DE FRANCE. First rumblings since September - Minister of Sports Marie George Buffet issued yesterday a statement urging Red Star to adhere to its commitments vis-a-viz the proposed move to the Grand Stade.. In response, the clubs' President, Jean-Claude Bras said " No rush - we have time. " and added, still critical of the consortium controlling the stadium, scene of the World Cup Final in July, " The Minister would be wiser to press the consortium, because they have not played the game and have taken advantage of their position of judge and jury accorded by the Minister. " Repercussions to follow, no doubt.. Updated 19th October: LAVAL-RED STAR 93 23RD OCTOBER. The away match at Laval has been brought forward to the Friday (23rd). Apparently, the facilities are to be used on Saturday evening for a horse race meeting on the adjacent hippodrome.
Updated 18th October: RED STAR-AJACCIO 4TH NOVEMBER. The LNF announced yesterday that the home match versus Ajaccio has been put back until the 4th November, a Wednesday, from Saturday 31st October. Watch out, this match kicks off at 6 30pm, which doesn't exactly make it easy to get to for those who work ! Updated 2nd October:GO AND SEE RED STAR FOR FREE ! But only if you're a kid. Up tp press three pre-season friendlies have been arranged (location as yet unknown): UNFP (9/07), Beauvais (13/7) and Auxerre (16/7). Details to follow.
Should Red Star be relegated into the National, the budget will be in the region of 15MF, 2.29M Euros or £1.5M.
After the departure of Samba Diawara, Guilhermo Mauricio has quit the club to sign a four-year deal with Laval (D2). Two other products of the Red Star academy are in the frame for a move away from Saint-Denis, Camille Oponga and Ted Agasson. Meanwhile it has been confirmed that Guillaume Bouisset has been allowed to leave, despite having one year remaining on his contract. The situation worsens for Red Star with the departures, and no immediate replacements on the horizon.G. VALCK
KICK-OFF. The big kick-off day for D2 is set for Saturday 31st July, and if Red Star feature in it the first match will be an away fixture. In case of descent, the National starts on Saturday 7th August.
BROUARD. Ex Red Star captain, Régis Brouard, 32, latterly with SM Caen signed a contract of two years with Nîmes Olympique (D2).
PRE-SEASON. Perparation for next season begins the 28th of June.
LUCAS. Stéphane Lucas signs a one-year contract.
BELISSAOUI. Aziz Belissaoui victim of a fractured tibia and will therefore be unavailable for three months. Another serious blow to a player already blighted by an injury picked up during the season 96-97 at Toulon. We wish him a speedy recovery.
WELCOME TO THE NATIONAL. Even if the talk is of a last-minute salvation for Valence and Red Star, next season, Red Star will play in the National along with :
The last spot will be filled with one of the following, who must play a mini-championship to determine who will be promoted. The teams concerned are :
STADE DE REIMS, BEAUCAIRE, LIMOGES and PONTIVY
Already gone are :
Forêt (2 years left on contract), Renaud (1 year), Lucas (?), Oponga (1 year), Diawara (2 years), Bouisset (1 year), Darras (1 year), Busuttil (1 year), Bellisaoui (1 year), Saci (2 years), Pizzo (apprentice-pro), Meïté (1 year), Soudani (1 year), Fellahi (1 year), Mauricio (1 year).
The National kicks off the weekend of the 24th July as does D1 & D2. Therefore 60 days before the start of Red Stars' return !
The situation is still unclear, because at the end of the season there will be play-offs amongst the second-placed amateur clubs in CFA to decide who will go up in place of Mulhouse. In effect, the latter have been forced out of the National due to finanical problems, and Saint Maur, another Paris club who finished third bottom in the National will still be relegated instead of taking Mulhouses' place.
As for getting out of the National, here is a season-by-season analysis of all the teams who have been relegated from D2 since 1992:
Gérard Valck
G.V. : Are Red Star down after the setback at Guingamp ?
J.L.Girard : Mathematically, no, but we need two wins and everyone else to lose. Chances are slim, and our destiny is now in the hands of others.
G.V. : After the two match victory run, the supporters were hoping for a miracle.
J.L.Girard : Me too, but unfortunately in the first half we weren't winners. The the turning points came with the missed penalty of Guilhermo (Mauricio), when the match was still goalless and also the injury to Stéphane (Lucas).
G.V. : About the injury to Lucas
J.L.G. : Not Guingamps fault, but simply a bit of bad luck with the collision of Maïté (Red Star defender) and Lucas. The former stood on our keepers' face.He had to go off for attention, his face covered in blood. The ref didn't want to lose any time, he thought that Sté,phane wouldn't be back. As it was just before half-time, I though that the best idea would be to put Guilhermo (Mauricio) in goal and wait for the break. But, down to ten men and during stoppage time, Samy (Michel), my former team-mate crucified us. I must admit that the Guingamps' doctor was not very fair-play about Lucas' injury....
G.V. : At 1-0 the match was still alive, especially with the return of the goalie...
J.L. G. : Indeed, so I waited a few minutes before sending on Bellisaoui, hoping to have the same effect as against Sedan. The players were up for it, but the second Guingamp goal deflated our hopes. But, I stress that the players fought until the end, the proof being the goal of Ted (Agasson)
G.V. : What does the future hold ?
J.L.G. : Get the message across, win the next two matches and look to 18th place and perhaps the possibility of re-admission back to D2 (Ajaccio cannot have two teams in D2, if Gazélec finish third). After Wasquehal we will take stock, but I keep faith in my youngsters who are after all the hopes of the club.
After fifteen minutes we are in 19th place, still three points off Amiens and Le Mans, but with a worse goal difference.
Eighteen minutes, another body blow as Wasquehal score a second goal, so Red Star now have no choice but to win.
Our next opponents Caen, three points behind Troyes in the promotion battle open the score against Nîmes through former Red Star player Brouard. Short-lived, however, as one minute later, Nîmes draw level again. Sedan-Gueugnon 1-1, but that does not concern us....
Just to point out at this conjuncture that Red Star have a friendly lined up next Friday (14th) at >Troyes. 28th minute; Sedan are on the way to D1, leading 2-1 against Gueugnon.
Come on, Saint-Etienne, Niort, Laval, Troyes, help us out ! 30th minute, defence still holding out, the strikers will do the job in the second half !
Beauvais are at the moment condemned, (0-0 at Cannes), no other news.
Another ex-Red Star Sami Boutal gives Caen the lead... Mauricio has been fouled, penalty ! Heart beat at 180... Mauricio misses and at the same time Amiens take the lead. The National looms closer, get prepared for the local derbies ! Relegation now between Le Mans, Valence and Red Star. Beauvais have already gone, as Cannes now lead 1-0.
Close, but Florès the Breton misses a golden opportunity against Lucas. Match is stopped in the 40th minute when Lucas is injured and our boys are struggling, only one chance created all match, that being the missed penalty.
Rectification, Caens' first goal scored by Boutal, not by Brouard. Half time looms; Wasquehal 42 pts, Amiens 41, Le Mans 39, Valence 37, Red Star 36 and Beauvais 32.
Oh bugger - Amiens two up against the Stéphanois, Troyes down to ten men and Mauricio unable to stop Michel scoring three minutes from the break. Red Star also down to ten men, impossible to know if Lucas has been sent or stretchered off. Caen score again, the situation is becoming critical. Will the Michels' goal stir Red Star, but at half time Guingamp lead 1-0.
.
Please, Saint-Ouen or Saint-Denis, let Mauricio equalise and let Belissaoui or Saci or Agasson or anyone for Red Star get a second in the second half !
Shit, if Red Star had stayed at Bauer, we would have had at least five more points, or if the recruitment had been done better...
In the National Gazélec holding Louhans and Noisy-Fréjus : 0-0.
As the minutes tick away the situation is becoming more unbearable. Nîmes pull one back through Lempereur at Caen. On the hour, Gazélec are one up, it's impossibile to have two clubs from Ajaccio in D2, so the 18th placed club won't go down, but at the moment we're nineteenth. Louhans equelise. 1-1.
Last fifteen, Guingamp dominate, things starting to look pretty grim; despite a near-miss by Bouisset.
Not many goals around, if we can score two, then we're right back in the hunt... then the National arrives as Flréres (sic) beats Lucas with only eleven left on the watch (2-0). National, and Racing 92 are one up and catching Gazé,lec. Will Racing replace Red Star in D2 (not at Colombes !). Penalty for Cannes, saved by the Beauvais goalie. Gazé,lec go 2-1 up.
Troyes pull one back in the last minute at Wasquehal.
At Guingamp, Mauricio misses a chance, it's just not his day. Two minutes left.
No news from Ajaccio-Nice, but who gives a toss anyway. Agasson scores with one minute left (1-2), please Mr Ref can we have a lot of stoppage time ? No, no miracles, it's all over.
Wasquehal : 42 Amiens : 41, Le Mans 39, Valence 37 and Red Star 35. 2% chance of survival now.
The correct answers are: 1897 - 5 - Domoraud - 74/5 - 48 018. Look out for the next competiton, between the 15th May and the end of June
RED STAR 93 have arranged a friendly match Friday 14th May at TROYES.

Four goals full of hope and four matches full of hope...
Can Red Star save its' season ? Sedan, Guingamp, Caen and Wasquehal will tell.
Following the defeat against Amiens, the Audoniens (tricky to get used to saying Marvilliens) came up trumps in the Berry.
Has the wheel of fortune finally turned in our favour ? The presence of nine players who have risen through the ranks at Red Star is without doubt the solution.
All to play for on Saturday 1st May at 8pm CET at the Stade Marville (disregard reports in the press, the match takes place Saturday and not on Friday 30th April) against in-form Sedan, unbeaten (up to the Cup match) since the start of 1999. A real challenge for the players.
Before the last home match of the season against Caen , Friday 14th May, we invite you to the big end-of-season sale of Red Star souvenirs.
and the exclusive book to celebrate the 100-year history of Red Star.
AMIENS. Last Chance Saloon time against Amiens, a week on Wednesday. Three points separate the clubs so a win is vital. The National (D3) steams towards whilst the Stade de France slips back into the distance.
BRAS IN HOSPITAL. Jean-Claude Bras, President of Red Star 93 has been taken to hospital following an as yet unspecified heart complaint whilst out jogging last Thursday. Last news was that he is obliged to spend a few days resting in a clinic. (GV).
Jean-Claude Bras announced after the Laval match that he would like to stage another match at the Stade de France before the end of the season. He pencilled in the Red Star - Caen match, due to be played in May. His original plan was for Sedan, but if Sedan qualify for the semis of the Coupe de France, the match would be put back to the 1st of May, at Marville. (GV).
The club still has to satisfy three conditions :
- avoid the drop (finish the season 17th or above)
- reinforce the technical staff
- present to the DNCG (the body scrutinising the finances of football clubs in France) in April, a proposal for a budget of more than 40 million FF (more than 6 million Euros).
NOTE: CASH ONLY AT THE TICKET BOOTH AT STADE BAUER.
Well it took just two minutes before the match last night was already lost. Another typical away performance. Well instead of moaning, here is a familiar story, "the Titanc", as played by a bunch of blokes from Saint-Ouen.
The ship is played by the Red Star 93 club
The Iceberg is played by the Stade de France
The hapless musicians who play on to their deaths are of course the clubs' players
Captain Bras has a brilliant idea, "throw Sérafin overboard", then, "Give that young guy Girard a bucket, he can bail us out", But it is all too late the zone rouge appears quickly, too many goals have entered the boat. Even the hopelessly out of tune musicians are running around like headless chickens.
Well what happens in the very end to all the characters we will have to wait and see, but for many if they are lucky the best the can hope for is the USA (the "National").
One sad supporter, says au revoir
The draw for the next round of the cup will take place on Wednesday at 12h30 CET at the HQ of the Maison du Sport in Paris. Judo champion Marie-Claire Restoux will draw out Red Stars' next opponents; the match will take place on either the 19th or 20th December.
LEAGUE CUP DRAW. It's to be Nice at home. The draw paired Red Star with Nice; earlier in the season Red Star registered a 3-2 home victory, the winning goal coming from a last-second Guillaume Bouisset free-kick. The next round will take place in January, either the 9th or the 10th.
LE MANS IN THE LEAGUE CUP. After beating Le Mans 2-1 earlier in the season, Red Star return to the Stade Leon-Bollé for the first round of the league cup. This will take place next Wednesday, the 27th. HOW TO GET THERE: A11 from Paris, junction 7 (Le Mans Nord). Follow the signs " centre ville ", eventually there will be signs for the Stade Leon Bollé. Parking - there is a large car park behind the stadium.
MICHEL ABSENT. Top scorer in D2, Sammy Michel missed the match against Nice because of an injury which I wouldn't have a clue how to translate back into english. Something muscular, but not serious as originally feared. Nevertheless, he won't be back until the badly-timed home clash versus Ajaccio.
DISCIPLINE. Jean-Yves de Blasiis was also absent against Nice, having picked up a one-match ban under the number of bookings received.
NEW BLOOD. Vincent Doukantie, attacking midfielder currently playing in the reserves, was named as one of the subs on Saturday. Despite running up and down the line a few times, he didn't get a game. His time will surely come, because he's only 21 and is a prospect for the future. He will wear the number 33 shirt.
